The problem with most tests busting the heat ray, FLAT MIRRORS SUCK. They produce a diffused beam beyond 10 ft and up. At 100 ft the pattern area doubles producing about 40% of the potential heat. Also holding a flat mirror leaning on the ground causes it to flex creating a linear beam at an uncontrollable focal point.
By distorting the mirror, you can create a smaller more concentrated beam per mirror. HUGE HEAT concentration DIFFERENCE.
