Soil is one of the earth’s most important natural resources. It underpins human food production systems, supports the cultivation of vegetation for feed, fibre and fuel, and has the potential to help combat and mitigate climate change. Given the right environment, soil can be a rich and complex ecosystem, accommodating a staggering array of biodiversity – biodiversity that helps produce nutritious food and support the climate crisis. Treated badly, it is just a lifeless bit of dirt that struggles to achieve this.
This workshop is for students who want to learn a bit more about soil. Brigid Barry from Farming for Nature outlines how to identify healthy soils, why healthy soils are important and how we can help soil.
If you can bring a soil sample to the lesson you can follow Brigid's instructions in the video or even better bring a spade to class or a trowel and check out the soil in the school grounds after the lesson.
