Before we talk about the kinds of paper available on the market I want to mention such a notion as the tooth of the paper. It means the ability of the paper to hold layers of pastel. The bigger the tooth of the paper, the more layers you will be able to apply. Do note though that when using very soft pastels the tooth gets full a lot quicker as the softer the pastels the more pigment they deposit when
applied to the paper.
Another thing to remember is the pressure you apply when drawing with soft pastels, the lighter the pressure the less pigment is deposited on the paper and the tooth is filled less than it would have been with a harder pressure.
One more thing to know about paper is such a term as acid free. When a paper is acid free it means that this paper will not get ruined over time as acid corrodes the paper and ruins the
artwork.
Professional artist grade papers today are acid free and you should not worry about your work yellowing over time and losing its vibrancy. Now let’s talk about the paper. There are two kinds of paper for soft pastels: non-abrasive & abrasive. You can also use soft pastels with pastel or acrylic ground on any other support but in this book we will look at paper only.
