A new poll showing growing support for socialism among Democratic voters is highlighting an ideological divide inside the party as Democrats look ahead to the midterm elections.

A CBS News poll found 58% of Democrats have a positive view of socialism, compared with 32% who view capitalism positively. The findings come as democratic socialist candidates and organizations have gained greater visibility in Democratic politics, while some of the party’s most prominent leaders are distancing themselves from parts of the progressive agenda.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries made clear Sunday that he does not support Medicare for All, a signature proposal championed by many democratic socialists.
“It’s not legislation that I am currently co-sponsoring or that I support,” Jeffries said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
Republicans are seizing on the divide, seeking to tie Democratic candidates across the country to controversial statements and proposals from figures on the party’s left flank.
RNC Chairman Joe Gruters argued Sunday that voters should take progressive candidates at their word, accusing some of wanting to “fundamentally change the country.”
