Investment scam syndicates are increasingly using social media, online relationships and the fear of missing out, or FOMO, to lure Malaysians into fake investment schemes.

Police said scammers identify targets on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok before moving conversations to WhatsApp or Telegram and posing as investment experts or financial mentors.

Malaysians lost RM413.81 million in 4,279 investment scam cases between January and June, with victims spanning different age groups and occupations.

Police said mule accounts are also used to move stolen money quickly, making it crucial for victims to report scams immediately so funds can be traced and frozen.

With syndicates increasingly using AI and deepfakes, police urged Malaysians to verify investment offers and be wary of promises of high returns with little or no risk.
