Soaking saxophone reeds in vodka sounds like a joke. I've been doing it for a few weeks now and my reeds last longer, stay flat, and
never grow mould.
In this episode I show exactly how I do it: what strength spirit
I use, how long reeds sit in it, how I store them between
sessions, and what happens to the reed if you leave it in too
long. I also cover the two things that go wrong when players
try this and give up after a week.
If you play clarinet, soprano, alto, tenor or bari, the method
is the same. The only thing that changes is how much liquid you
need.
Is this better than a reed case with humidity control? That
depends on how you practise. I explain where each one wins.
