#CEOAS geography students, led by Associate Professor Mark Raleigh and graduate student Bareera Mirza, got out of the classroom and into the field -- to practice using different snow science tools to measure snow depth, snow snow density, and snow-water equivalent.
"Today we are just doing it for a class, but usually as scientists all these measurements are really important... these ground measurements serve as the validation data for our models, for our radars, and a lot of other purposes," said Bareera.
The class also visited a SNOTEL site, short for snow telemetry, which is an automated and remote weather station that measures snow depth, snow water equivalent, temperature and precipitation. The station, one of over 900 across the western United States, transmits publicly-accessible data on an hourly basis.
