This is TAS, using eleven checkpoints.
The objective "Careful Crane Clamber" in the level "Bob-omb Battle Factory" (BoBF for short?) done using only five A-presses. This is an improvement on Samuel Vitale's record of eight A-presses. I used their strats as a basis for my playthrough. Here's a step by step:
I did this primarily because, as I was watching Samuel's video, I could think up various ways to save at least one A-press for the ramp at the start. I initially hoped to be able to get enough height on it with simple DRs, so that I could get on the box, but I underestimated how slippery the rmamp is. Getting pushed on the ramp by the Bob-omb also doesn't work, as your downwards speed goes up regardless and you quickly break through the Bob-omb. I figured that, if all else failed, I could at least try to clone 94 coins in order to get a star to appear and use that to get on the box. Proably wouldn't have worked either, but it doesn't matter now.
While unnecessarily sliding, I noticed the Shy Guy one platform over started spewing fire at me. I managed to lure him to my position, and here I had two more ways of getting up the ramp. I figured getting hit by far would be easier than to DR unto the Shy Guy, so I went with that.
Next came the most difficult part: getting over the barrels. Samuel used two A-presses here, so I tried to do it in zero. That didn't work out, and I think pulling that off may be near impossible (Plush may be able to do it?). I'm glad I managed to shave off one A-press here, though!
The Heave-ho strat and the long-jump/wall-kick that gets Mario on the crane's structure is all Samuel's work. Copying the latter was hard, and I died many times doing it. It takes two A-presses too. I doubt these can be shaved off. That invisible wall is annoying!
The last two A-presses are used to move up on the crane's structure. A skilled player may be able to do it in one. I am no skilled player, as proven by the fact that I died four times just trying to grab the star.
So to sum up:
1 A-press for the barrels
2 A-presses to get on the crane
2 A-presses to move ontop the crane
I believe 2 of these can still be saved.

This was done tool-assisted, using a whopping 25 save points. Four clones were harmed during the shooting of this footage.
So, lets go through this step-by-step:
The first two red coins are a joy to grab, but I sadly do not yet have the skill to get up there without pressing A. Luckily, a nicely placed tree makes it only one A-press to get up here. Lets see if we can save this one at some point :)
I need two Goomba clones to be able to get to the other part of the level if I want to save the Crazy Box for later. Cloning in CH is a pain because it seems like some weird bubble is spawning every frame, messing up any well-thought out cloning method. You can watch me improve my cloning skill over time, but its not particularly nice. Search The Science of Cloning for a rundown on how cloning works in _Super Mario 64_.
Now Im on the other part of the level, collecting the red coin at the pole is easy. Sadly, I need an A-press to get behind the building here and collect the highest positioned red coin. This A-press is the most important to save, as we need to use it three times in a 100% run...
Now, it is possible to get the red coin on the pillar at 3:45 without killing the Shy Guy by doing a particularly good dive recover, but I took the easy way out.
I sped through most of the swimming. This part is boring and simple, and I doubt anyone would care to see it all in real time. The red coin on the dock is last, then we use the Crazy Box to get back on the bay.
I accidentally saved over my gameplay without recording, which is why there is this weird jumpcut. Dont worry, I didnt press A in the mean time. I hope you can forgive me for my clumsiness...
Here, there was another issue: The star is positioned too high to collect with a simple dive recover. I was forced to clone two more Goomba to be able to nab it. Quite annoying.
Oh yeah, important note: for some reason, i only sped up footage, and not audio, which causes some odd audio glitches. Ill get better over time :p")

Not a hard mission to do for the most part. The two pillars are (or rather: will be) the difficult part. I havent managed to get onto one by using the pyramid yet, but who knows. Perhaps the sprite Pokey can also be used in some way...

I drew out this route a while ago, but was hoping to figure out how to save one or two A-presses...
Remaining A-presses:
0:25 to get onto the second piano key. It would be really neat if we could save some A-presses in this area in general, but its really hard...
0:58 to stop sliding and get onto the platform. I doubt well ever save anything here, but who knows. I might play around going to this from the other way...
1:50 to get out of the guitar. The only thing I can think of to save this A-press is with cloning, but cloning with Chuckya is downright impossible, so I doubt this will work out.")
