Everybody wants to improvise and nobody knows where to start. Here is the simplest possible entry point into jazz piano improvisation, and you can do it on the very first chord progression you learn in my new Smooth Piano Jazz course.
"What did I do? I just made something up. And all I made up was just playing the notes that I'm already playing, and the notes that are automatically right there within my grasp of that hand position."
That's it. You do not need scales, modes, licks or theory to begin improvising. Play the jazz chord, then noodle on the notes already sitting under your fingers plus the ones in between them. Keep it simple, stay inside the hand position, and count the eight beats so you land on the next chord right on time.
"Stay simple at first. Just play simple things. Go up and play it up an octave, so that you feel those eight clicks go by before you change to the next chord. And you're already playing jazz."
That is the honest truth about jazz improvisation: it is not invention out of thin air. It is a small number of things you already know, rearranged, and delivered on time. Get comfortable there and you start adding licks, passing tones and chromatic approach notes on top of it.
