A jazz line is not a scale run and it is not a pattern you memorized off a chart. It is a phrase, and phrases have punctuation. This one, played over a G2/B, rises up and stops on a note that is unresolved on purpose, so it hangs there like a question mark. Play a different line over the same chord and it comes to rest, and that one is the period at the end of the sentence. They just do different jobs, the way a question and an answer do.
WHY THIS CHANGES HOW YOU IMPROVISE
- You stop worrying about playing "enough" notes. A short line that lands in the right place says more than a long one that never resolves.
- It tells you where to aim. A question-lick wants to be followed by something. An answer-lick wants space after it. That is how you build a solo instead of just filling the bar.
- It is why great jazz playing sounds relaxed. The player is not racing to get the notes in. They are talking, and talking has pauses in it.
- The target note does the work. Aim at the 3rd or the 7th of the chord that is coming and the line belongs. Stop somewhere unresolved and you have asked a question. Same notes, different destination, completely different meaning.
- You can practice this tonight on one chord. Play a line that stops in the air. Then play one that comes home. Listen to the difference.

PART THREE is over fifty jazz licks, one over every chord in those progressions: chromatic enclosures, chromatic descents, arpeggios up and walks back down, and the diminished arpeggio off the 3rd of the V chord that resolves by half step into the I.
