Tool assist may have been necessary here, as getting the star was jankier than expected. Falling backwards while missing the wall wasn't getting anywhere (I first did this with Luigi).
Somehow, whether grabbing the wall changes Mario's hitbox detection, or if it just delayed the fall enough to coincide with a strangely large hitbox detection from the star, Mario 'grabbed' it from a distance.
