A couple of days ago a spent rocket upper stage hit the moon, it was a largely inconsequential event, but regardless the story got a lot of coverage, because.... reasons?
In the 60's and 70's there was lots of smashing things into the moon, sometimes intentionally, sometimes accidently. Sometimes science was done as a result.
