The forward roll is an awesome way to get down with alternate picked arpeggios, aka crosspicking. You can see in slow motion that the wrist is capable of generating the necessary curved and efficient picking motion all by itself. But when you get this happening you will *not* be able to feel the vertical component of this. The movement simply feels like side to side deviation wrist movement. Our tutorial on this subject is two hours long and includes 55 slow motion examples with tablature. It is *by far* the clearest and most accurate tutorial on wrist motion we've ever done.
