Developed by Swiss Aircraft manufacturer Pilots as a more powerful version of their more popular PC-7 trainer, the PC-9 first flew in 1984.
The PC-9M is a modernised version which was developed with improved manoeuvrability. Eleven Pilatus PC-9s equip the Slovenian Air Force, based at Cerklje ob Krki in the south east of the country, with 152 Letralska Eskadrilja (Aviation Squadron). Nine are upgraded PC-9M versions and these are called the Hodournik (Slovenian for 'Swift') in Slovenian service.
In addition to training the aircraft are also used in a light attack role.
The Pilatus PC-9 military aircraft is a turboprop trainer aircraft that is among the top aircraft in this category. It is equipped with electronic equipment that enables advanced training, basic combat training, and represents a transitional type between trainer and combat aircraft. The PC-9M version, introduced in 1997, was produced as a result of cooperation between the Slovenian Armed Forces and the Israeli military industry and set new standards for this aircraft. It has an extended dorsal fin, which improves the stability of the aircraft, modified wingroot fairings, stall strips on the leading edges as well as new engine and propeller controls. It has weapons racks suspended under the wings. In the cockpit, it has instruments adapted for combat missions.
The 152nd Aviation Squadron operates as part of the 15th Military Aviation Regiment and is intended to carry out airlift of forces and assets in the homeland and on operations abroad. In cooperation with allies, it provides protection of the airspace of the Republic of Slovenia and fire support to units of the Slovenian Armed Forces.
It participates in the training of SAF units and the operation of aircraft guidance groups, performs maintenance of aircraft and helicopters at level I and, if necessary, participates in level II maintenance and participates in the protection and rescue system. It consists of the command, the first section of PC-9 combat training aircraft, the second section of PC-9 combat training aircraft, the air transport section and the air technical platoon.
