I've heard some weird, unhelpful, vague, mystical, and just plain wrong explanations of why the bottom of a stretched out slinky stays in place when you let go of the top. So I thought I'd make an update of my slinky video with an explanation of why it happens.

This footage was shot at 1000 frames per second with a Redlake N3 high speed camera.
