SLATE DIGITAL FG2A || Ultimate LA2A compressor plugin shootout vs TIMP OPTO 32 & OPTICOM XLA3
I promised I would do it and even after surgery on Wednesday Ive done it!!
I have been waiting over 10 years for slate digital and Steven Slate to release an optical compressor like the teletronix la2a compressor. And finally its now available with the slate digital all access pass in the virtual mix rack. There have been many algo plugins / la2a plugin emulations that have attempted to perfect this iconic limiter and to be honest I've done a plugin comparison on about every one of them!
However I have been told by many of my subscribers that I should check out plugin developer Tim Petherick and his range of acustica audio nebula 4 plugins (you need n4 to run his plugin libraries) TimP plugins use convolution sampling which is very similar to Acustica audio plugins so he samples the actual hardware where algorithm plugins dont.
His opto 32 compressor plugin has been renowned as the best as it allows you to separate the pre, compressor and even adds in a clipper for more harmonic distortion.
The Opticom xla3 is a hardware emulation la2a rip off from the plugin alliance mega bundle. I have already done a plugin alliance review of this plugin but I knew many would complain that this wasnt included as Steven Slate has stated that his fg2a opto compressor is the best la2a plugin emulation on the market.
I'll be using the compressor on vocals (after NEOLD v76u73b), compressing bass guitar and also as an acoustic guitar compressor.
