Launched into orbit on May 14, 1973, Skylab was America's first space station, and is still the only space station to have been operated exclusively by the United States. Despite encountering difficulties caused by damage during launch, astronauts aboard Skylab were able to conduct experiments that gave NASA valuable knowledge about long term life in space, and their solar observations contributed greatly to the fields of physics and astronomy.
