“18 and Life” tells the story of a troubled teenager named Ricky who grows up in a rough environment and spirals into violence, alcohol abuse, and recklessness. After accidentally killing someone with a gun, he receives a life sentence in prison. The chorus phrase “18 and life” refers to being 18 years old and getting “life” in prison.

Songwriting and inspiration
The song was written by bassist Rachel Bolan and guitarist Dave Sabo. For years, many fans believed the story came from a newspaper article about a real teenager involved in a fatal shooting. However, Sabo later explained that the original inspiration partly came from observing his brother’s difficult experiences after returning from the Vietnam War, though the story evolved into the fictional Ricky narrative.
