Jeff Hijlkema | Six Part Orchestral Suite // BBCSO PRO demo @jeffhijlkema | Uploaded April 2020 | Updated October 2024, 10 hours ago.
Hi there, for my 6-part Orchestral Suite I primarily used Spitfire Audio BBCSO Pro instruments. Some parts do get a little push from the SA Hans Zimmer Percussion library.
On all instruments I used the BBCSO Pro build-in Jake Jackson 'Mix 1' mic setting, with about 25% of the build-in reverb. When mixing this Suite I used another 50% Cubase send signal of FabFilter's full mix 'Vanilla Hall' reverb, on just the tonal groups and about 50% Cubase send signal of FabFilter's full mix 'Rich Chamber' reverb on the percussion groups.
I recommend using some good speakers or headphones to get a fine stereo experience.
0:00 - 1. Introduction
1:37 – 2. Waltzing March
2:28 – 3. Galloping along
3:31 – 4. Danger on the track
4:11 – 5. Arrival!
5:12 – 6. Reflection
Few words on realistic mockups: in my experience it's all about the concept of tweaking the hell out of your sample library. That means spending loads of time automating and tweaking every necessary envelope, untill a musical phrase, track and section matches a desired result. It also helps using a favorite orchestral reference sound to match yours with. I already use this when setting up my template, balancing mics and adding inserts and sends, because I find it very inspiring to start out with a beautiful orchestral sound.
Apart from that it's simply also about learning to orchestrate, making orchestral events sound logical and natural in the first place. I learned a lot by creating orchestral arrangements using piano sketches from Scottish traditionals.
Be well,
Jeff Hijlkema
