Moisture level and water balance in watercolor are some of the greatest learning curves in watercolor. I used to tell students that they needed to paint quickly, because watercolor dries quickly, but this would result in students rushing through their paintings and making mistakes.

Paintings created in an anxious rush are not happy paintings. Yes, watercolor does dry quickly, but if we take the time to visualize our next steps before the brush touches the paper, we can use the approach of "thinking slow, then painting quickly." Pause, plan, then implement, and then pause again.

Getting to know your subject well by painting it repeatedly is another way to prepare yourself. Because watercolor looks most beautiful when it is "fresh," and hasn't been overworked by excessive handling, we want to know our subject well enough to be able to paint it with a light touch and an effortless confidence. That can ONLY come from familiarity with your subject!
