A number of studies, particularly those published between the 1930s and 1970s, purported to demonstrate very large benefits from drinking fluoridated water. In 2000, these studies were critically reviewed by an expert committee, the "York Review," and found to be of extremely poor quality. The York Review found, for example, that few studies alleging benefits from fluoridation had controlled for other factors (e.g., poverty) that can greatly affect tooth decay, and had ever been a "randomized controlled trial" — the gold standard in medical research and required before most drugs can enter the market. The scientists who participated in the review, including Sir Iain Chalmers, have publicly stated their surprise at the "poor quality" of research they found.

![Dryden, Ontario Fluoride Presentations 2008
Prior to a public referendum vote on April 14th, 2008, citizens of Dryden, Ontario heard presentations from both proponents and opponents of fluoridation. On April 1st, Dr. Peter Cooney, Canadas Chief Dental Officer gave his presentation. The next day, Dr. Paul Connett of the Fluoride Action Network gave his presentation and response to Dr. Cooney. Both presentations are included here for comparison.
The result of the referendum is summed up in the announcement below:
Dryden voters soundly reject fluoridation

FAN Bulletin 953:
April 15, 2008
Yesterday the citizens of Dryden delivered a huge rejection to the notion of restarting fluoridation in their town. A massive majority said NO - 1902 versus 292. Thats 87% to 13%.
This is an embarrassing defeat for Canadas chief dental officer Dr. Peter Cooney who spoke in Dryden on April 1 and did his best to persuade the citizens that fluoridation was safe and effective (see FAN bulletin #950, 4/7/08).
I spoke with one of the leaders of the citizens campaign last night after the victory was declared - local pharmacist Rob Button and he said that they wanted to share what they have learned in this campaign with other communities in Ontario and Canada. He is looking forward to doing this at the FAN 3 conference in Toronto in August. Are the dominos beginning to fall - the Niagara region in 2007; Quebec City on April 1, 2008 and now Dryden on April 14? How many more before August?
Congratulations to all the citizens of Dryden who made this wonderful victory possible.
Paul Connett
Possibly the most amazing statement made by Dr. Cooney in his presentation was the following:
Youve had fluoride in the water here for over 40 years. Youre going to hear people saying it causes horrific health effects - it doesnt. I only came today [ to speak in Dryden, Ontario ], but when I walked down the center of Dryden, I didnt see anyone growing horns, and you guys have been drinking fluoridated water for 40 years. So, please dont feel that its going to cause you huge health problems - cause it isnt. -Dr. Peter Cooney-
