Emergency shut downs require short closure times of the emergency shut down valves. This results in high pressure waves though the system as a large fluid column is stopped in an instant. Surge vessels can be installed near the ESD valve to mitigate some of these pressure waves. The fluid has additional time to slow down while the surge vessel fills up. In this video the filling of a surge vessel during emergency shut down is analyzed using pressure data received from BOSfluids and imposing this as a boundary condition in a CFD analysis.
