This tutorial provides a quick overview of the characteristics of Soie Gobelins and how to manage the thread for best results. Gobelins is not difficult to work with, it just behaves a little differently from spun silk threads like Soie d'Alger or Soie 100/3. The benefits are a much smoother, shinier stitch that makes for absolutely gorgeous cross stitch and a silky, buttery stitching experience. The thread also has spectacular luster under evening light.

Also note: Gobelins is a high twist thread. As you stitch, you will increase the twist on the thread - this is normal. Periodically drop your needle and let the thread hang loose and untwist, then resume stitching.

I'm using a Bohin size 28 tapestry needle here, which is a little large for the weave of the linen. A John James size 10 tapestry beading needle with a blunt tip would probably be the better choice but it is really personal preference. Both can be purchased from NIAH: needlestack.com/WebStore/Accessories/Needles.html
