It is that time of year when we leave these shapes after extracting the shavings. (Actually March or April is the best time to make these, stay ahead of the game!)
The idea behind these is that children can paint them and give them as presents, so keep it quick and simple, don't sand so fine poster paint won't stick! I just use 180 grit.
