Simone Young has opened each of her seasons as Chief Conductor of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra with a Mahler symphony to rave reviews. From 25–28 February, we continue this tradition with the vast and moving ‘Song of the Earth’, a symphony in all but name, brought to life by world class vocalists Simon O’Neill and Alexandra Ionis.
Part symphony, part song cycle, Mahler’s masterpiece draws on German translations of Tang dynasty Chinese poems, a thread echoed in Qigang Chen’s ‘Er Huang’ for piano and orchestra, featuring melodies from Peking opera. French superstar Jean-Yves Thibaudet dazzles in this gorgeous concerto, reaching “a climax of Mahlerian dimensions” (Bachtrack).
