This 1953 Cuban peso commemorates the 100th birthday of Jose Marti. Jose Marti was a Cuban revolutionary who was responsible for Cuba's independence from Spain. Jose Marti advocated for democracy in Cuba. Jose Marti's dream was never realized as Cuba is currently a Communist dictatorship. The 1953 Cuban peso has a mintage of 1 million. This peso was minted at the US Mint. Thus, the Cuba peso has the same silver content as a Morgan dollar. The US Mint produced many coins for Cuba. After Fidel Castro took over Cuba, the US Mint stopped making Cuban coins.
