Firms may rationally choose not to disclose information because disclosure is irreversible, and the option to remain silent can carry value that varies over time and circumstances. AI can accelerate research, but it can fabricate convincingly, which poses severe risks to research integrity. Generative AI can rapidly produce theory, data descriptions, tables and referee responses that appear highly credible, even when empirical results are entirely fabricated. Human judgment remains indispensable: While AI excels at generating content and structure, it struggles with internal consistency, optimization logic and proof validation. Careful human scrutiny is essential to detect conceptual and logical errors.

Campbell Harvey, the J. Paul Sticht Professor at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, presented “The Option Value of Corporate Silence” at the Fink Center for Finance’s seventh annual Conference on Financial Markets. Harvey’s research examines corporate silence as an active strategic choice rather than a residual of disclosure. His presentation entailed a candid, behind‑the‑scenes account of how generative AI can be used to generate ideas, drafts, referee reports and revisions, revealing both the power and serious risks of AI‑assisted research. The session concluded with remarks on theory coherence, validation limits and implications for academic standards by USC Associate Professor of Economics Marianne Andries.

The annual conference, hosted by UCLA Anderson School of Management, combines theoretical and methodological rigor with timely policy relevance. Anderson’s leadership tenets include directly confronting both the opportunities and dangers of AI in academic scholarship, while fostering critical dialogue on how institutions must adopt ethical standards for evaluation, disclosure, transparency and accountability in an AI‑accelerated research environment.
