Sidechain isn’t some stylistic EDM trick: it’s basic problem solving.
If your kick and sub hit at the same time and live in the same frequency range, they’re going to fight. You don’t get more power, you just get mud and a weaker low end overall.
Sidechain simply creates space. Every time the kick hits, it briefly ducks the sub or bass so the transient can come through clean. That’s why mixes suddenly feel tighter and more punchy, even if nothing else changes.
A good way to approach it: don’t overdo the pumping, just aim for clarity. Adjust the sidechain curve until the kick feels like it “punches through” without the bass disappearing.
Once you understand it like this, you start using it intentionally.
