The Blessing of the Fleet in Kemah opens the spring shrimping season in bays along the Texas Gulf Coast. Shrimporee in Palacios heralds the fall shrimping season, running from August 15 to November 30. Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church held the inaugural event in 1964, which featured not only the traditional benediction given to a parade of decorated fishing boats but also a pageant to crown the Shrimporee Queen. This 1975 promotional film segment focuses on another festival highlight: eating tasty shrimp! Saint Anthony moved the annual celebration from August to October after the COVID-19 pandemic.
