Released in 2002, developed by Prolific Publishing and published by TDK Mediactive, Shrek Swamp Kart Speedway is a kart racer based on DreamWorks’ 2001 film. On paper, the formula makes sense: take Shrek and the movie’s fairy-tale cast, put them into karts, add themed weapons and build the game around the successful Mario Kart formula. In practice, it became one of the more infamous licensed racers on the Game Boy Advance.

Rating: 2.5/10

The game features 12 playable characters, with eight available initially and four more to unlock. Shrek is joined by characters such as Fiona and Gingerbread Man, while Donkey, Monsieur Hood, the Big Bad Wolf and Lord Farquaad are among the unlockables. Each racer has different ratings for speed, handling and recovery, although the poor driving physics make these differences less meaningful than they should be.

There are 16 tracks divided between four circuits: Swamp Rally, Forest Run, Country Hustle and Dragon Strip. Locations are loosely inspired by the movie and its fairy-tale setting, taking you through swamps, forests, rural areas and castle environments. The amount of content is actually respectable for a licensed handheld racer, but the tracks themselves are difficult to enjoy.

Like Mario Kart: Super Circuit, the game uses a pseudo-3D rotating track surface with scaled sprites. The resemblance ends with the basic technology, however. Track textures are muddy and visually noisy, making corners and boundaries surprisingly difficult to read. Objects can blend into the scenery, character sprites are rough, and the constantly shifting ground creates an unpleasant sense of motion rather than convincing speed. At times, simply figuring out where the track goes is more challenging than racing on it.

The handling is an even bigger problem. Karts feel sluggish and awkward to steer, with turns often producing either too little response or an unexpectedly sharp change in direction. Colliding with scenery can completely destroy your momentum, while falling from parts of the course leads to lengthy recoveries. Instead of rewarding careful racing, the game frequently feels like a struggle against its own controls and collision detection.

Power-ups are collected during races and include the expected assortment of attacks, hazards and speed boosts, presented as magical spells to fit the Shrek theme. There are also cursed pickups capable of working against the player. It is a potentially amusing idea, but the items lack the clear feedback and satisfying impact found in better kart racers, and the extra randomness does little to improve races already hampered by unreliable controls.

The audio fares no better. Music is repetitive and harsh, while compressed sound effects and character samples quickly become tiring. Even the constant vehicle noises can become irritating during longer sessions.

There are a few redeeming qualities. Sixteen tracks and twelve racers provide more content than some movie tie-ins, the different areas at least attempt to represent Shrek’s world, and multiplayer is possible through the Game Boy Advance link cable. Dedicated Shrek fans may also get some novelty from seeing the characters turned into kart racers.

Unfortunately, none of that fixes the core experience. Shrek: Swamp Kart Speedway is technically playable, but poor visibility, clumsy handling, frustrating collisions and abrasive presentation make racing far more unpleasant than it should be. With Mario Kart: Super Circuit demonstrating how well this genre could work on the same hardware, the difference in quality is enormous. Today, its greatest appeal is as a curiosity for Shrek collectors or players interested in notoriously bad licensed games.
