Did you know the phrase “separation of church and state” is not found anywhere in the Constitution?

The First Amendment says, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." In other words, the government was never meant to establish a national church or control people’s faith.

Somewhere along the way, many began interpreting that as meaning faith should be removed from public life entirely.

The idea of “separation of church and state” came from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson, where he described a “wall of separation” protecting the Church from government interference, not silencing people of faith from influencing culture, law, education, or society.

Have we confused freedom of religion with freedom from religion?
