What is SBC-5?

SCSI Block Commands-5 (SBC-5) is the latest evolution of the SCSI command set and a key specification supporting Serial Attached SCSI (SAS). SBC-5 introduces new capabilities designed to improve storage performance, management, scalability, operational efficiency, and resiliency in modern enterprise and data center environments.

In this short video, learn about the key features of SBC-5, including:

• Failed element depopulation with data preservation – Remove a failed storage element without reformatting the media or losing existing data, minimizing disruption and recovery time.

• Dual- and multi-actuator HDD support – Enable greater parallelism and throughput in next-generation hard disk drives (HDDs).

• Enhanced HDD actuator queue management – Give hosts greater control over workload behavior by extending Command Duration Limits (CDLs), helping improve efficiency and reduce tail latency.

• Expanded HDD zoning support – Support a broader range of zoned storage configurations for **SMR-capable HDDs** and large-scale sequential-write workloads.

• Broader capacity-change information definitions – Improve how storage devices communicate capacity changes to hosts, increasing transparency and predictability.

• JEDEC UFS data stream support – Enhance interoperability with Universal Flash Storage (UFS) devices.

### What is SBC-5?

SBC-5, or SCSI Block Commands-5, is a SCSI standard that defines command and device behavior for block storage devices. As part of the SAS ecosystem, SBC-5 continues to evolve SCSI capabilities for modern enterprise, hyperscale, and data center storage environments.

### Why does SBC-5 matter?

As storage systems scale and workloads become increasingly data intensive, storage infrastructure needs predictable performance, flexible management, and strong resiliency. SBC-5 addresses these needs with enhancements particularly relevant to modern HDD-based storage systems.
