Short tailed shearwater (Ardenna tenuirostris) chick is waiting to be harvested. The chicks are fed and fattened by parents for 80 days. Then the parents migrate to Arctic region leaving the chicks alone. The little fat nestlings weigh almost one kilo each. 300,00 chicks are commercially harvested. Their mutton-like fresh meat is sold in markets. Their down and feathers are prized for pillows and bedding. Those chicks escaping harvest migrate North to continue their life cycle..
