Two U.S. West Virginia National Guard members were shot and critically wounded Wednesday near the White House, where they had been patrolling as part of heightened security operations.

Local police said one suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

The shooting happened around 2:15 p.m. near the entrance to Farragut West Metro Station.

A Nikkei reporter, who was near the scene, heard seven to eight shots, prompting pedestrians and drivers nearby to flee.
