The German Maschinengewehr 2 (MG 2) or Machine Gun 2, is a belt fed general-purpose machine gun adopted by Germany in the late 1950's. The MG 2 is a MG 42 that has been converted to the, at the time, newly adopted 7.62 NATO (7.62x51mm) Cartridge. This retains the high rate of fire, originally associated with the MG 42. Additionally it has been adapted to utilize the U.S. M13 disintegrating belt links. This one is mounted on Lafyette 42, which translates to gun carriage in English, tripod. It provides a stable and accurate platform with recoil mitigation mechanism, mount for optical sight, and a lever trigger mechanism. The butt stock is typically removed in this configuration.
