Shoes and boots in an abandoned gold mine? That's what I found in the dark depths of the abandoned Albert Johnson Mine during a recent trip through New Mexico. Justin from the Southern New Mexico Explorer channel joined me on this trip so we could explore and document a handful of remote mines up in the forested mountains that we had been interested in for quite some time.

In this video, we stop at the Albert Johnson Mine -- a former gold and silver mine that was operated in the late 1800s and early 1900s. A majestic metal headframe sits over an 1100-foot deep vertical shaft that, unfortunately, is plugged about 60 feet down from the surface. Further exploration of the area led us to an open horizontal mine entrance that allowed us to access some nearby underground workings -- and shoes!
