Welcome to our latest video exploring the exquisite Manoir de Ban, the serene Swiss retreat and beloved home of Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin. Join us as we uncover the rich history, stunning gardens, and the essence of Chaplin’s life at this elegant neoclassical manor, where he spent the final 25 years of his life. Discover how this haven became a cherished sanctuary for Chaplin and his family and why it remains a must-visit destination today.

Charlie Chaplin, the iconic English comic actor, playwright, producer, editor, film director, and composer renowned for his character “The Tramp,” is a figure of immense historical significance in the silent film era. In September 1952, while traveling to England to promote his comedy-drama "Limelight," Chaplin received advice from his half-brother to find a new home in Switzerland, as the U.S. had revoked his re-entry visa. Seeking a peaceful and politically neutral haven, he discovered the enchanting Manoir de Ban, marking a significant transition from Hollywood’s bustling streets to Switzerland’s tranquil countryside.

Chaplin purchased the Manoir de Ban on December 31, 1952, for CHF 180,000 (around $41,000). In his 60s, Chaplin chose to live in exile in Switzerland with his family, unable to return to America for over 20 years. Nestled in the scenic village of Corsier-sur-Vevey, between the Lavaux vineyards, Lake Geneva, and the Swiss Alps peaks, the manor's history is as captivating as its beauty.

The manor was initially built by Charles-Emile Henry de Scherer and later transformed into the grand estate it is today. It was renamed "Manoir de Ban" in 1946 by American diplomat Grafton Winthrop Minot and his wife Anne de Lancey. The 14-hectare (35-acre) estate, designed by Riviera’s star architect Philippe Franel in 1840, boasts a grand façade with fluted pilasters and intricately decorated windows, embodying classical beauty amidst a serene, natural setting.

The manor features 19 rooms across three levels, including an elegant entrance hall, a spacious dining room perfect for Chaplin’s gatherings, a cozy sitting room underscoring the significance of music in his life, and a beautiful library where he wrote his autobiography. The upper floors house several authentically decorated bedrooms, while the basement, once used for wine production, was converted into archives to store Chaplin’s works.

Beyond the main house, the estate includes various outbuildings, such as a farm and a garage. The farm, predating the property itself, was modified multiple times and served as staff accommodation, storage, a barn, and stables. The garage, built in 1900 and renovated around 1980, provides space for three vehicles and features staff quarters on the upper floor.

The estate's park, covering nearly 35 acres, descends gently towards the Veveyse and Nant streams. Meticulously maintained lawns and a diverse collection of exotic trees, including sequoias, beeches, spruces, elms, maples, and cedars, enhance its beauty.

Today, Manoir de Ban functions as Chaplin’s World Museum, which opened on April 17, 2016, after a 15-year project to preserve and honor Charlie’s legacy.
