![Leonard Lauder on learning from his mother Estee Lauder
Estee Lauder was born in Corona, Queens] New York City the second child born to Rose Schotz and Max Mentzer.[8][9] Her parents were Hungarian Jewish immigrants on the mothers side her grandmother was from Sátoraljaújhely and her grandfather from Gelle (now Holice, Slovakia),while her father had Czech-Jewish ancestry. Lauders claims of descent from European aristocracy were discredited in a biography, Estée Lauder: Beyond the Magic (1985) by Lee Israel; her New York Times obituary observed she was a New Yorker and not an aristocrat at all, notwithstanding the mythmaking that is so much of the magic of the beauty industry] Her favourite story was that she had been brought up by her Viennese mother in fashionable Flushing, Long Island, in a sumptuous home with stables, a chauffeured car and an Italian nurse.
In actuality, her mother Rose emigrated from Hungary to the United States in 1898 with her five children to join her husband, Abraham Rosenthal.[8] But, in 1905, she married Max Mentzer, a shopkeeper who had also immigrated to the United States in the 1890s. When their daughter was born, they wanted to name her Eszti, after her mothers favorite Hungarian aunt, but decided at the last minute to keep the name Josephine, which they had agreed upon. However, the babys nickname became Estee, the name she would grow up using and responding to. Eventually, when she launched her perfume empire with her husband, she added an accent mark to make her name look French and began pronouncing it the way her father had in his Hungarian accent. ![Tyre Nichols Skateboarding as a teenager
In Memphis, Tennessee, on January 7, 2023, five Black police officers from the Memphis Police Department severely beat 29-year-old Tyre Nichols, a Black man, during a traffic stop. He died three days later in the hospital.[2][3]
The officers stopped Nichols for alleged reckless driving,[a] pulled him from his car, and used pepper spray and a taser on him. Nichols managed to break away. One officer, as other officers pursued Nichols, said I hope they stomp his ass. When officers caught up with Nichols, they beat him for about three minutes, punching and kicking him in the head and striking him on the back with a baton while he was restrained. In various videos of the incident, Nichols is never seen striking back at the officers.
Nichols was hospitalized in critical condition and died three days later.[6] An autopsy commissioned by his family found extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating.[7]
The five officers were fired on January 20, and on January 26 they were arrested and charged with murder, kidnapping, assault, and misconduct; two firefighters who were on the ambulance that took Nichols to the hospital were relieved of duty pending an investigation. On January 27, the Memphis Police Department released four clips of edited video showing events between 8:24 p.m. and 9:02 p.m.[8][9]
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the United States Department of Justice both opened investigations.[10] Widespread protests began on January 27. Tyre Nichols Skateboarding as a teenager](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/MxL_yLYsZ6M/mqdefault.jpg)

Since its debut, CNN has expanded its reach to several cable and satellite television providers, websites, and specialized closed-circuit channels (such as CNN Airport). The company has 42 bureaus (11 domestic, 31 international), more than 900 affiliated local stations (which also receive news and features content via the video newswire service CNN Newsource), and several regional and foreign-language networks around the world. The channels success made a bona-fide mogul of founder Ted Turner and set the stage for conglomerate Time Warners (later WarnerMedia which merged with Discovery Inc. forming Warner Bros. Discovery) eventual acquisition of the Turner Broadcasting System in 1996. Ted Turner on the launch of CNN](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/NEeKLnHHB0Y/mqdefault.jpg)
