It has been authentically narrated in Sunni and Shia sources that 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“Destroyed are two types of individuals: someone who is extreme in their love for me, extolling such virtues of me which I do not possess, and someone who is extreme in their hatred, causing him to slander me.” [Musnad Ahmad, Nahjul-Balaghah, Bihar al-Anwar]
