A young lady, Elizabeth Baker, comes to Baker Street. She seeks protection from Sherlock Holmes. Elizabeth fears that she may be another victim of a maniac, operating in London. Four beautiful girls had already died from the hand of an unknown man one after another. Sherlock Holmes has time to detain the killer. It turns out to be Mr. Calway - an unremarkable man in the street, whose only weakness is the game of cards. On the day Calway must be hanged, Holmes wonders: why Miss Elizabeth's parents were not in the courtroom? This circumstance seems suspicious to him.
The story begins with the acquaintance: Dr. Watson, in search of a home in London, rents an apartment at Misses Hadson’s Straight Arrow Widow. Although he's fine with the accommodation, his neighbor leaves much to be desired – an eccentric young man without any clear occupation makes Dr. Watson suspect he is a trespasser and a real criminal.
