Battery electric commercial vehicles use regenerative braking as endurance braking to comply with regulation requirements of UNECE R13 Type II A. To prevent overcharging events, OEMs either use a hardware braking resistor which are bulky, costly or incorporate a larger battery where the capacity cannot be fully utilized.
ZF’s new Software Brake Resistor replaces the hardware brake resistor with an AI- driven, cloud-based solution. By using geospatial data and the vehicle’s real-time energy profile, it predicts the battery capacity needed along the route, avoids overcharging, and manages regenerated energy intelligently.
The results:
✅150 kg more payload, around
✅€1,500 cost saving per vehicle, faster OEM homologation,
✅lower fleet TCO.
This innovation marks a shift to software-defined braking and charging, making road transport safer, cleaner, and more efficient.
🏆 It has been recognized by the CLEPA - European Association of Automotive Suppliers organisation as Top Innovation 2025 of Digital Category.
