Hi everyone! Today I'm sharing my non-spoiler review for the book She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan. This is a historical fantasy queer re-imagining of the origins of the Ming Dynasty, following a young girl character destined for nothing. She takes destiny into her own hands when she steels her brothers identity in an attempt to trick heaven and gain her brother's destiny for greatness. Despite generally rave reviews from the book community at large, this book was a pretty big miss for me. The pacing is quite slow with some jarring and unexplained jumps in time, and a plot that seems to gloss over or outright skip all of the dramatic and action-packed scenes. The writing was a little more distant than is my preference for characters, but I would agree that the characters themselves were well-written, and that the style changed a little bit depending on who's perspective we were getting at the time. Themes relied heavily on destiny/fate, expected gender roles, and identity with a 2/3 success rate. Overall I just felt like the story was a little bit lack-lustre and left me fairly bored and disconnected. I think you'll enjoy this book if you really prioritize reading for themes or are really into historical fantasy and don't mind a more distant character connection. But I don't think this book is going to be for you if you read to deeply connect with your characters OR are looking for a dramatic, action-packed, military-heavy ride.
