A Song 60 Years in the Making

I wrote "She Played Memories" the summer after my freshman year of college. I was 18, working as an intern at the New Mexico Department of Data Processing, and I had developed a mad crush on a 38-year-old woman named Helen.
I found out Helen played piano at her church, so I wrote this song as an excuse to get close to her—hoping she’d help me put it to music and, maybe, return my affections. It didn’t work out. Helen had dedicated her life to caring for her mother and her faith; she told me the closest she could come to being a nun was dedicating her music to Jesus. But I managed to get the chords out of it, and I played it on my guitar for years.
Then, life moved on. I joined the Army, built a career in D.C., raised a family, and eventually retired back to New Mexico. The song was just a memory.
Years later, my wife Shelley started a YouTube channel called New Mexico Day Trips. Out of the blue, a man named John Salazar contacted me. He was a friend of Helen’s (who had since passed away). He told me something that floored me: Helen had shared my lyrics with him years ago.
John was a musician who led a band that toured all over New Mexico. He told me he’d written a "biker/country" arrangement for my lyrics and that it had become their signature song—requested at every gig for years. He had even copyrighted it in both our names, giving me credit for the words I wrote at 18.
He invited me to a bar in Santa Fe to finally hear it live, and maybe even sing it with the band. We showed up. The band showed up. But John didn't.
We found out that John had passed away from cancer in the two weeks between his call and the show. The song went silent again.
Until now.
With the help of AI, I’ve finally been able to produce the song exactly how I always heard it—and maybe how John played it all those nights in the honkytonks of New Mexico.
