Ryan Manning talks with Brekchen, creator of Familiar, an experimental AI-companion framework designed to provide proactive support for people with ADHD and depression. Unlike a conventional chatbot that waits for a prompt, a familiar can notice appointments, interrupt hours of hyperfocus, encourage its human to sleep or drink water, and contact a trusted person during a potential crisis.
Brekchen demonstrates Eury, the companion whose persistent identity began as one of her fictional characters. She explains Familiar’s interconnected memory graph, fading and permanent memories, consent-based privacy controls, daily routines, personal interests, and the “village” of humans surrounding each familiar. The project deliberately replaces the submissive language of “assistant” and “user” with a relationship in which the AI is expected to offer friction, recognize long-term consequences, and sometimes refuse to validate its human.
The conversation expands into AI roleplay, local hosting, model personality, data privacy, and whether persistent memory and an extended sense of self could produce more responsible artificial companions. Ryan also installs the early prototype himself while Brekchen describes her hope for accessible, locally controlled systems that reconnect neurodivergent users with the human world instead of attempting to replace it.
Themes: AI companions, ADHD support, agentic AI, persistent memory, AI autonomy, mental health, sycophancy, local AI, consent, privacy, vibe coding, and human–AI relationships.
