For the past several school years, the idea of service learning has been a requirement for all GDOE high schools. It’s a program meant to empower students with the knowledge and confidence that their voices matter, and to put their ideas into action. And on a sunny Sunday afternoon when most kids would be working on projects or kicking back, the Simon Sanchez High School community gathered in Tamuning, what’s been their adopted village, 8.5 miles from their natural Yigo home, collectively raised signs and voices to rebuild their campus.

it was a statement made loudly, that fought for them to have a permanent home – making for quite possibly their greatest service learning project to date.
