This lecture explores the history and development of social welfare responses to modern-day challenges and how competing narratives about responsibility and agency shape our understanding today. How can the concept of principled pluralism, as articulated by Abraham Kuyper and others, offer a framework for considering diverse mechanisms for addressing social welfare responses in a diverse public square? Biblical principles on caring for the least of these provide the foundation for what ‘ought to be;’ there is room for new ideas, new partnerships and innovation as we follow God’s call to love our neighbour.
