Previously on MechMinutes: Shafting series, we covered the primary considerations when selecting Tolerances & Fits. All past videos are posted for your viewing pleasure to get caught up to this week’s episode of Linear Shaft Applications & Related Alterations.
Linear shafts, in conjunction with linear bushings, are primarily used to transport a load. Because of this, most of MISUMI’s linear shafts are hardened and/or coated to withstand the natural wear from the application. It is important to note - if your application is not transporting, but simply supporting a load you will find cost savings in configuring a MISUMI structural post instead.
MISUMI offers over 36 different shapes when configuring a linear shaft.
This, accompanied with 26 standard alterations, allows for maximum customization in your mechanical design. MISUMI alterations are additional machining processes that ease the assembly process. For example, high precision length and diameter tolerances can be selected for tight clearances. Or, wrench flats can be added to prevent rotation while torquing fasteners.
Generally, alterations are available for all configurable components.
Along with the vast selection of linear shafts, MISUMI offers complementary accessories to provide a full solution.
Application #1: us.misumi-ec.com/us/ideanote/detail/000208.html
In this example, a workpiece is being lifted in order to transition to the next station. Four linear bushing with rolling elements ride along the linear shaft to provide a smooth, low-fiction guide throughout the entire stroke. These bushings are offered in many shapes and sizes to accommodate your requirements.
Application #2: us.misumi-ec.com/us/ideanote/detail/000027.html
Here, we can see the pillow-block bushing is chosen due to the mounting orientation. As the bushings actuate toward each other, the workpiece guide centers the unit on the conveyor. Shaft supports are also used in the application to position the linear shaft in a precise location. As you’ve guessed, these are also available in various styles and can be configured with extreme precision.
Application #3: us.misumi-ec.com/us/ideanote/detail/000232.html
This next application depicts a positioning mechanism. The hand wheel drives a lead screw which converts rotary to linear motion. The linear shafts are used to help support the load, and prevent rotation caused by the lead screw. Shaft collars are another commonly used component that complement linear shafts. This application shows their two main functions: Supporting a shaft and providing a mechanical stop.
In this position, the collar can be directly mounted to a surface and act as a shaft support. Or, they can be affixed to the shaft to limit the stroke of the linear bushings. MISUMI also offers collars with urethane padding to dampen the impact of metal-on-metal contact. With millions of components available MISUMI offers a one-stop-shop for your mechanical design! Now that we’re familiar with linear shafts, join our next episode as we dive into rotary and drive shafts!

SHAFT TOLERANCES & FITS | MECH MINUTES | MISUMI USA

Previously on MechMinutes: Shafting series, we covered primary considerations when selecting material and surface treatments. All past videos are posted for your viewing pleasure to get caught up to this week’s episode of Tolerances & Fits.
A ‘tolerance’ is the allowable amount of variation from a specified dimension. When tolerances are combined between a shaft and bore, they can be classified into three categories known as ‘Fits’. The Clearance [Fit], Interference [Fit], and Transition [Fit] can either assist in assembly, or prevent them from being disassembled easily.
A Clearance fit ensures a shaft can be freely inserted into the intended bore. This generally means the maximum limit of the shaft is less than the minimum limit of the bore diameter.
An Interference fit guarantees the shaft and bore will interfere at every point within their tolerance zone. This is commonly referred to as a ‘Press Fit’. Often the two components must be joined by excessive force, or by altering the atmospheric temperature to slightly expand or shrink the diameter for assembly.
The Transition fit is a combination between the Clearance and Interference Fit. Depending on the actual dimension of the shaft and bore, it is possible that either could occur. This fit is best used when a shaft must be held in a precise location. If interference should occur, it will not be to the extent where disassembly is overly difficult.
Misumi shafts and bores follow the JIS shaft fit tolerances. Selecting the proper tolerance is critical to achieve the desired fit between two mating components.
This tolerance table can be found in the ‘Technical Reference’ section in each catalog. The columns represent the tolerance grade; while the rows are organized by dimeter ranges. Finding where the two intersect will indicate the corresponding tolerance range. If we look at a 10mm shaft with an h6 tolerance (10h6), we can see the expected tolerance is no larger than the basic size, but is capable of being 11microns under 10mm. This brings the expected minimum to 9.989, and the maximum to 10.000mm.
Misumi offers a useful table [Fig. 2.2] to help you choose the appropriate tolerance combination is your application. If we would like this 10h6 shaft to exhibit a clearance fit, we can see each tolerance class that would satisfy this condition.
Now that we’re familiar with shaft selection, join us next episode where we will take a look at linear shaft applications and related alterations!
