In this video we sew a 6 inch Zipper overlay to a lining panel of the Ethel Tote by Swoon Patterns.
Zipper overlay is sewn to the lining fabric and around the zipper window at a 1/8'' seam allowance.
Lining Fabric is a cotton fabric interfaced with a lightweight woven interfacing prior to cutting.
***** PLEASE NOTE-- This bag did not need to be turned through the zip pocket.
If turning the bag through the zipper pocket, you will still construct the same way, however you will need to have 2 separate zipper pocket lining pieces OR cut the bottom of the zipper pocket lining off once constructed to create an opening to turn through.
Notes for adding an Overlay to a pattern without a zipper pocket--
The zip pocket lining fabric and zipper should measure 2 inches wider than the zipper window in the overlay. ( ex. for a 6 inch overlay the pocket lining and zipper would measure 8 inches wide.) The length would be determined by the pattern. I suggest at least a half inch in addition to the seam allowance from the bottom of the lining fabric.
