At least seven people have died and 23 remain missing after a catamaran ferry carrying around 270 passengers and crew capsized off the coast of North Cyprus on Sunday.

The vessel departed from the port of Kyrenia bound for Taşucu in Turkey's Mersin province when it immediately began taking on water for reasons that remain under investigation.

Emergency search and rescue operations are ongoing off the coast of Kyrenia as teams work to rescue survivors.
