90 years ago a civilian-military uprising led by Oswaldo Aranha seized most of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and waves of people marched towards the governor palace, demanding the governor Getúlio Vargas to accept to take part on a revolution to put a end to the oligarchic period known as "The old Republic". After considering his options Vargas accepted, and as new uprisings began through the country a revolution never seen before or after in brazilian history began.
Eventually by october 24, with the situation unsustainable and the population of the capital revolting and looting the government buildings, the military forcefully removed the President Washington Luis and demanded the surrender of the rebel government on a last ditch attempt to end the civil war, but it was refused by Vargas who was about to march on the capital. Without options and running low on morale, the junta surrendered and on november 3rd 1930 Getúlio Vargas became the first brazilian president to not be appointed by the running oligarchy, and this paved the way for the 1934 constitution that resulted on the first period of brazilian democracy, that sadly ended with Vargas couping his own government in 1937.
The 1930 revolution was commemorated in Brazil on it's first 15 years, until Vargas was couped to prevent him from running again in 1945, but reinstated with his reelection in 1950. After the 1964 coup it was buried for good, as the people who retook power in the 1964 were the same oligarchs grandsons of slave lords that had lost power in 1930.
